Gotta check out the heavy stuff dude, that’s where they all ended up. The Devil’s Blood (a hard rock band) is a good start, but it seems like black and death metal bands like Agalloch, Opeth, Woods of Ypres, Mgla, Deathspell Omega, etc. really try and write some seriously beautiful lyrics for their songs.

They’re still out there. You just don’t notice them.

But seriously, modern music is not pathetic, you just have to find it, not on the radio.

I wouldn’t say you have to go to harder music to find the poets but they certainly exist amount some fairly specific metal subgenres.
Have you listened to blind guardians latest album, beyond the red mirror?
My playlist tends to have a lot of female vocalist metal as well like within temptation, xandria, delain, epica, etc.

Us poets are still around. I’m one of the poets! Here’s one of my latest works:
Here I sit
Taking a shit
I am broken hearted
Cuz I paid a dime
And only farted
